A plane en route to Nunavut from Winnipeg has crashed with nine people aboard, an official with the territorial government says.
The Perimeter Aviation plane aborted a landing and crashed less than a kilometre from the end of the runway in Sanikiluaq, carrying seven passengers and two crew, at about 6 p.m. ET, according to a Nunavut official who spoke with CBC News.
Sanikiluaq is an Inuit community of 850 residents and the southernmost community in the territory, situated on the Belcher Islands in southeastern Hudson Bay.
The scene is now being controlled by the RCMP.
The official said there were survivors and injured passengers had been moved, but there was no word on their conditions.
According to its website, Perimeter Aviation is a Manitoba company with scheduled flights, a flight training school, and charter and contract flying.
