INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE HUMAN BRAIN

The human brain is the most complex and least understood part of the human anatomy. There may be a lot we don’t know, but here are a few interesting facts that we've just covered.
1.  NERVE IMPULSES TO AND FROM THE BRAIN TRAVEL AS FAST AS 170 MILES PER HOUR. Ever wonder how you can react so fast to things around you or why that stubbed toe hurts right away? It’s due to the super-speedy movement of nerve impulses from your brain to the rest of your body and vice versa, bringing reactions at the speed of a high powered luxury sports car.

2.  THE BRAIN OPERATES ON THE SAME AMOUNT OF POWER AS 10-WATT LIGHT BULB. The cartoon image of a light bulb over your head when a great thought occurs isn’t too far off the mark. Your brain generates as much energy as a small light bulb even when you’re sleeping.

3.  THE HUMAN BRAIN CELL CAN HOLD 5 TIMES AS MUCH INFORMATION AS THE ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA. Or any other encyclopedia for that matter. Scientists have yet to settle on a definitive amount but the storage capacity of the brain in electronic terms is thought to be between 3 or even 1,000 terabytes. The National Archives of Britain, containing over 900 years of history, only takes up 70 terabytes, making your brain’s memory power pretty darn impressive.

4.  YOUR BRAIN USES 20% OF THE OXYGEN THAT ENTERS YOUR BLOODSTREAM. The brain only makes up about 2% of our body mass, yet consumes more oxygen than any other organ in the body, making it extremely susceptible to damage related to oxygen deprivation. So breathe deep to keep your brain happy and swimming in oxygenated cells.

5.  THE BRAIN IS MUCH MORE ACTIVE AT NIGHT THAN DURING THE DAY. Logically, you would think that all the moving around, complicated calculations and tasks and general interaction we do on a daily basis during our working hours would take a lot more brain power than, say, lying in bed. Turns out, the opposite is true. When you turn off your brain turns on. Scientists don’t yet know why this is but you can thank the hard work of your brain while you sleep for all those pleasant dreams.

6.  SCIENTISTS SAY THE HIGHER YOUR I.Q. THE MORE YOU DREAM. While this may be true, don’t take it as a sign you’re mentally lacking if you can’t recall your dreams. Most of us don’t remember many of our dreams and the average length of most dreams is only 2-3 seconds–barely long enough to register.

7.  NEURONS CONTINUE TO GROW THROUGHOUT HUMAN LIFE. For years scientists and doctors thought that brain and neural tissue couldn't grow or regenerate. While it doesn't act in the same manner as tissues in many other parts of the body, neurons can and do grow throughout your life, adding a whole new dimension to the study of the brain and the illnesses that affect it.

8.  INFORMATION TRAVELS AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS WITHIN DIFFERENT TYPES OF NEURONS. Not all neurons are the same. There are a few different types within the body and transmission along these different kinds can be as slow as 0.5 meters/sec or as fast as 120 meters/sec.

9.  THE BRAIN ITSELF CANNOT FEEL PAIN. While the brain might be the pain center when you cut your finger or burn yourself, the brain itself does not have pain receptors and cannot feel pain. That doesn’t mean your head can’t hurt. The brain is surrounded by loads of tissues, nerves and blood vessels that are plenty receptive to pain and can give you a pounding headache.

10. 80% OF THE BRAIN IS WATER. Your brain isn’t the firm, gray mass you’ve seen on TV. Living brain tissue is a squishy, pink and jelly-like organ thanks to the loads of blood and high water content of the tissue. So the next time you’re feeling dehydrated get a drink to keep your brain hydrated.

Now my question is this: If God can design something as complex as the human brain, don't you think He can answer ALL your prayers and provide solutions to your every problem? Think about it. God still answers prayer!

HOW TO PREPARE THE REAL AFANG SOUP

I know I’m a dude but for now let’s forget that fact. This is my area. I can cook very well. Where do you think I got the name, Jeff The Chef from? (smiles). Now back to business.

Cooking Afang soup is easy. There are many methods of cooking this soup. Depending on the taste you want, or how thick, green and fresh you want it. There are times I add palm oil at the very beginning like this one. At other times, I add palm oil when cooking is almost done.

Afang soup is very healthy and filling. There are times I just eat the soup alone with a spoon or my fingers. When cooking this soup, remember to make the quantity of water leaf more than the Afang. Add both vegetables at the same time and please do not squeeze out the green juice in the Water leaf before adding. You can blend the Afang if you like. It can also be pounded with a mortar like I did this one.

Even if you forget to buy other ingredients, do not forget crayfish, smoked catfish and stock-fish. And of course periwinkle. We call it “mfi”. For snail and kpomo lovers, please add those. Snails and cow skin will give an added taste to your Afang soup.

Another method of cooking Afang soup is by adding cooked oil to fried crayfish and onion. This method gives a sharp, spicy taste. The soup is cooked, but without palm oil or crayfish. When soup is ready, chopped onion and grounded crayfish are fried in palm oil, added and allowed to cook a little before removing from heat. This fried crayfish method of cooking Afang soup can make one finish a whole big bowl of eba. (Trust me. I know what talking about)

Sometimes, after washing my periwinkle, I dry it very well in the oven before cooking. Dried periwinkle is fun to chew when cooked.

Boil goat meat with stock fish, onion and salt. Add palm oil and pepper to stock fish. Add seasoning to boiling palm oil and stock fish.

 Ingredients:

·         Water
·         Goat meat 1 kilo (or more)
·         Stock fish 1 big pack (or more)
·         Onion
·         Salt
·         Palm oil
·         Seasoning cubes
·         Crayfish 1 cup ( 7cm measuring cup)
·         Smoked cat fish 3 (or more)
·         Afang leaves 4 cups
·         Water leaf 2 large bunches
·         Periwinkle 2 cups (or more)
·         Snails (optional but very highly recommended)
·         Cow skin (optional but very highly recommended)
·         Dry Shrimps (optional)
·         Bonga fish (optional)
·         A sprinkle of Hot leaf (optional)

Preparation

·         Add enough ground crayfish
·         Add washed smoked cat fish
·         Add pounded Afang vegetable to cooked stock and tender meat/stock fish
·         Stir in Afang before adding washed water leaf
·         Add waterleaf immediately after. Do not squeeze out the chlorophyll in your water leaf
·         Add washed periwinkle.
·         Stir and mix well before removing from heat
·         Afang soup is cooked
·         Cooked Afang vegetable soup still looks green and fresh.

Salt is used to preserve mfi/ periwinkle. So to avoid turning your nice pot of soup into a pond of salt, add salt and seasoning sparingly before adding periwinkle. Ensure that the
Periwinkle is properly washed with much water to remove the salt.

Do not let vegetables boil and cook for long before removing from heat. There is so much water (green juice) in water leaf, which drains into the pot if allowed to boil. To avoid cooking watery vegetable soup. Do not boil green vegetables.

Afang vegetable soup can be served with garri, semo, wheat meal, pounded yam and even starch.

Afang soup is very irresistible. Even these white dudes have tasted and testified!

GETTING RID OF BODY ODOR NATURALLY

Unpleasant body odor is an embarrassing problem that everyone had to deal with at some point. Although there are many deodorizing products on the market, many of these contain harmful chemicals whose long-term use is not recommended. Therefore, many people are seeking more natural alternatives for eliminating body odor.

1. Take activated charcoal capsules daily. Body odor occurs as the result of the many toxins circulating in the body, which are then excreted through the skin. Activated charcoal helps by binding to the toxins in the body, thus reducing their ability to produce body odor.
Activated charcoal can be taken internally in the form of capsules or applied externally. Internally, the capsule should be taken once daily for a period of 3 to 6 months to notice a beneficial effect.

2. Rub lemon juice on your skin. Lemon juice is one of the most ancient remedies used for reducing body odor.
Lemons contain citric acid; so by applying lemon juice directly over the skin, one reduces the pH of the skin making it more acidic. This acidity helps to limit the growth of bacteria.

Lemon is one of the most easily available natural substances for reducing body odor and is effective even for people who have extremely sensitive and delicate skin. Just a teaspoon of lemon juice can be rubbed over areas where you sweat a lot, daily, for a period of 3 months.

3. Try using orange peel. Orange peel is can be used locally to eliminate strong and offensive body odors.

Oranges are a very rich source of vitamin C and contain ample amounts of citric acid. Like lemons, oranges reduce the pH of the skin and lead to a reduction in the growth of the bacteria on the skin.
Orange peel is mild and can be used by even those with a sensitive skin. Not only does it reduce body odor but also lightens the blemishes on the skin. It is an excellent natural remedy which is found in all the parts of the world and is very cost effective too.

4. Wipe your skin with apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar is a fairly strong anti-septic which kills bacteria and controls odor forming toxins on the skin.

Apple cider vinegar can be applied externally using a cotton ball. Dab areas where you sweat a lot with the cider vinegar and let it dry, do not wash off.
Apple cider vinegar is very strong and people with sensitive skin may experience adverse side effects like burning or itching. Therefore, a small patch test is recommended before using this product.

5. Apply rosemary oil. The rosemary herb is used very commonly in Italian cuisine. It has antibacterial as well as antifungal properties, which both help to reduce bad odors on the skin.

Although you can use rosemary in cooking, studies have shown that rosemary oil is more effective if it is used externally. It reduces body odor and renders its sweet fragrance to the areas its applied to.

Rosemary oil can be used daily for on areas where you sweat a lot, especially the armpits. External application is recommended for long-term use, as it does not have any harmful effects.

6. Make a paste from holy basil. Holy basil is a herb with a lovely natural scent and is an extremely effective anti-bacterial by nature. One can use it as dressing over several foods or as an external application.
The taste of holy basil is mild and sweet in nature. To combat body odor, try to eat 4 to 6 fresh leaves daily or in cooked dishes.

To use holy basil more effectively, you can crush the fresh leaves into a paste and apply it to the malodorous areas (such as the armpits) for five minutes before rinsing off.

7. Try baking soda. Baking soda is highly recommended for people who have minimal sweating but still experience bad body odor. Baking soda is to be mixed with equal parts of lemon juice so that a paste is formed.

Rub this paste into the skin while bathing to effectively reduce bacterial growth on the skin.
Once the bacterial growth is reduced, problems with body odor will be much easier to control.

8. Experiment with corn starch. Corn starch is most useful for people in whom there is excessive sweating, leading to bad odors produced by the body.
Use corn starch along with lemon juice to make a paste-like consistency. Rub this paste externally on the body while bathing and let it remain on the skin for 5 minutes before rinsing off.
Both corn starch and lemon juice increase the ph of the skin, controlling the odor-producing bacteria.

9. Dab the skin with tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is known for its anti-septic properties as well as its strong but pleasant odor.
When used as an external application, it kills the bacteria present on the skin and thus reduces toxin formation.
You may dab a bit of tea tree oil onto excessively sweaty areas with a cotton ball to curb body odor.

10. Apply a sage herb paste. A herb called sage reduces the action of sweat glands, thereby reducing the quantity of sweat produced. Secondly, it has strong anti-bacterial properties and anti-fungal properties that prevent further growth of toxic bacteria on the skin.
Owing to all of the above mentioned benefits it is used for reducing body odor. It has to be made into a paste using water and applied externally on sweaty areas daily.
Leave the paste on the skin for 15 minutes before washing off.

11. Drink turnip juice or apply it externally. The traditional Indian Ayurvedic system of medicine recognizes turnip as an ancient remedy for coping with body odor.
Turnips are full of vitamin C and like other products control the growth of bacteria, thereby reducing body odor.
Turnip juice should be applied externally or may be consumed daily for a period of 3 months minimum.

Add tomato juice to your bath water. Tomato juice is an ancient remedy for reducing body odor. Tomato juice has excellent anti-septic properties which makes it a great option for reducing offensive body odor.
When the juice of tomatoes is used in bath water it kills the bacteria present on the skin and consequently the presence of malodorous toxins is greatly reduced.
If bathing is inconvenient, the intake of tomato juice should be at least a glass daily over a period of 3 months.

MAKING LIFESTYLE MODIFICATION

1. Bathe twice a day. One must bathe twice a day, especially in the morning, as sweat and body odor builds up on the skin overnight. Bathing helps to keep the skin clean and fresh. It also removes unpleasant odors and using a fragrant soap/body wash adds a pleasant, fresh fragrance to the skin.

2. Wear fresh cotton clothes. Cotton clothes allow the skin to breath, reducing the amount of sweat. Therefore, wearing cotton clothes keeps the skin healthy, dry and odor-free.

3. Avoid wearing closed footwear with socks for a long period of time. Closed footwear will lead to offensive odor from the feet if you sweat a lot, as there is lack of aeration. Aim to wear sandals, flip-flops or more breathable shoes as much as possible.

4. Apply talcum powder after bathing. Talcum powder will help to keep the skin dry and reduce body odor.

5. Quit smoking and chewing tobacco. Smoking and chewing tobacco lead to the production of free radicals which damage the body. They also lead to the formation of bacteria on the skin, which emit bad odor.

6. If you have hair under your arms or areas that you have hair that are causing odor, shave regularly.

CHANGE YOUR DIET

1. Drink lots of water. Water is an excellent solvent that flushes all the toxins from the body. Water is the most neutral substance and reduces the formation of bacteria in the intestines. Drinking around 8 to 10 glasses of water daily will help keep the skin healthy, hydrated and odor-free.

2. Eat food products containing probiotics. Probiotics are natural, gut-friendly bacteria which help to control the growth of other toxic bacteria in the intestines.
Probiotics promote the growth of the bacteria lactobacilli bifidus which improves digestion and reduces gut toxins. Substances like yogurt and buttermilk contain probiotics.
Consuming one cup of a probiotic substance each day is very helpful and should be continued for a period of 6 months. It will improve your overall health as body odor is often just a matter of good digestion!

3. Drink liquid chlorophyll or wheatgrass juice. Liquid chlorophyll is an effective antiseptic product which can be consumed orally. However, it has a very strong odor and may not sit well with all users.
Try to drink a minimum of one glass of juice per day for a period of 6 months to notice the positive effects on body odor reduction.
If you find the taste off-putting, you can start by consuming consuming very small quantities til you get used to the taste. Then you can gradually increase your intake to a glass a day.

4. Follow a balanced diet. One must consume balanced amounts of carbohydrates, proteins and fat. One should also avoid overeating. This will lead to a healthy internal environment and reduce bacterial growth in the intestines as well as on the skin.

5. Avoid fried foods and junk foods and vitamin B complex. One must avoid fried foods as they contain a high calorie content and increase a person's basal metabolic rate, which leads to profuse sweating. Simple, unprocessed foods will reduce the sweating and also lead to overall better health. Excess vitamin B complex might lead to a fishy odor in sweat.

6. Include herbs in your cooking. Including more pleasantly fragranced herbs in your cooking will help to improve the odor of your sweat. Some of the most effective herbs for this purpose include coriander, parsley, oregano and mint.

SOME HELPFUL TIPS

Some types of seafood like tuna or swordfish contain high amounts of mercury, a toxin that can give you a nasty body odor.

Also consuming high amounts of spicy foods, red meat, garlic, onion, curry spices and fenugreek can negatively affect the smell of your sweat.

TURN UNEMPLOYMENT INTO SOMETHING BETTER

Unfortunately, unemployment is often associated with negative feelings of fear, unworthiness, and stress. After being unemployed for a while, many will feel that they have lost all purpose and control of life. However, if you find yourself without a 9-5 daily routine, you will soon realize the one advantage that you have over your behind-the-cubicle friends – TIME.
Being unemployed for some time before landing your next job is necessary as it gives you time to improve your knowledge and the skills needed for your future career. Put all your stress aside and follow with me to learn how you can take advantage of a negative situation and turn it into a wonderful experience that can help place you above your fellow job-hunters.

1. Get to Know Yourself.
We are in a constant state of change, and it’s perfectly natural that some of our interests, skills, and weaknesses are evolving as the years go by, therefore a reassessment of our traits is critical if we wish to progress in our career. For that reason, take this time to evaluate yourself, everything from the skills you obtained at your previous employment to your failures and flaws. Make a list of your strengths and weaknesses that will help guide you in addressing future interview questions. Below are some questions that you must ask yourself before considering the next step:
·         Is there something you need to improve or learn? Are you missing a license/certification?
·         What are your drawbacks?
·         What are your strengths? What were you praised for at your last job?
·         Do you enjoy working in a team environment or prefer solo projects?
·         Do you like travelling internationally for business meetings?
This is also a great time to figure out exactly what you want in a career.
·         Is your dream job really your dream job or just something that you’re fooled into believing by friends and family or even society?
·         Did you really like your past job and do you want to repeat the same daily tasks as before?
Converse with yourself to figure out the perfect career that will make YOU happy even after the “honeymoon” stage during employment wears off.

2.    Improve/Modernize a Skill.
A lot of the knowledge that we possess is no longer current due to the constant introduction and easy access to new information and research. A programmer who knows how to work with only code from the early 2000′s is not seen as a viable asset for the company. The purpose of this step is to upgrade a current skill and obtain new knowledge that can be considered very valuable in the eyes of the employer.
It is simple as subscribing to blogs, downloading free guides, reading articles daily, or purchasing a paperback written by an industry leader. You can also join Google Hangouts that pertain to your industry and learn the new trends that can be imperative to your new employer.
Take this time to search through an endless supply of free and paid online courses that can provide you with certification upon completion, such as Udemy. By adding new skills and courses on your resume, it is a great way to show your future employer your time-management skills and most of all, that you value your time. The best thing about this step – you can do this all from the comfort of your favorite arm chair!
3.    Perfect Your Presentation/Interview Skills.
Not all of us are born to be stadium-packing speakers, so if you lack such skills, it is crucial that you begin to practice your verbal and non-verbal behavior as it can be the deciding point of whether you’ll get the job. Strong verbal communication skills are highly valued by most employers, as they are signs of educated and competent individuals. For this reason, learn new vocabulary to eliminate the ‘ummms’ and ‘yeaas’ when speaking to an interviewer. If you have a strong accent then practice pronunciation.
Research the most commonly asked interview questions and formulate the perfect answer that depicts your interest and skills. Make sure to practice your non-verbal behavior, such as hand movements, posture and even smiling, as this is vital in creating the best first impression. Studies of the employment process indicate that 65-70% of hiring decisions may be based on non-verbal communication. If you feel the need to walk around your home voicing your answers out loud like a crazy person, do it.

4.    Take Time to Search for Your Dream Job.

Don’t start applying to the first job advertisement you see, rather take the time to figure out what classifies as your dream job and use a variety of tools to find the perfect employer. Use multiple job-hunting sites, such as GlassDoor, Monster, Indeed.com, CareerBuilder and LinkedIn Job Seeker Premium (by upgrading your account) to look for jobs based on your salary requirements, position, location and skill set. A lot of these sites now feature reviews, salaries, and information about the company culture so that you can learn everything you need to know before you apply to ensure that it is the best fit for you.

5.    Put Effort into Developing a Great Portfolio.
Many jobs require for the candidate to provide the employer with a portfolio showcasing their best and latest work; this can be a deal breaker if your portfolio lacks in presentation and quality. Take this opportunity to work on your portfolio by adding new content, purchasing a new binder, or creating title pages. Anything that would make you stand out from other candidates can significantly help your application during the evaluation process. Make sure that it is clean (no coffee stains!) and that the first page includes a hard copy of your resume. Divide your portfolio by sections and use sheet protectors to ensure that your work is safe from fingerprints and accidental dog drool.

6.    Become a Freelancer.

Our office is now our computer with the Internet bringing work to the worker not the other way around. If you are a marketer, graphic designer, web developer, copywriter, artist or editor, this a great opportunity for you to work for international companies from the comfort of your home. A freelance job can help pay for your bills while you search for your dream job. Begin by searching for contract jobs on Freelancer, Guru, and Elance. Additionally, if you land a great gig, you can add it to your work experience, further boosting your image in the employer’s eyes.

7.    Pick Up a Hobby.

Everyone has at least one thing they love to do but never seem to have time for. Whether it’s going to the gym, knitting, biking, spending time with family and friends or learning to meditate, now is your chance to grow as an individual and experience all of the beautiful things that life has to offer. Let your creativity blossom and you will soon find happiness where there was fear.

8.    Spend Time with Friends and Family.

We often neglect the people that matter the most, especially when we are pulling 12-hour days or are on strict project deadlines. Call up a friend that you haven’t seen in a while, or a relative that you have ignored, and schedule a time to meet with them. Go for a walk, cook some lovely dish together, enjoy the experience and replace distance with closeness.

In conclusion, you may have found yourself without a job but there is no need to despair. By planning out your days and establishing a routine, you can turn unemployment into a positive situation that can help you transform your insecurities into advantages. Every negative situation will have something positive — even a dead clock shows the right time twice a day. After all, unemployment is temporary, though how you make the most of it is what counts.
